Shotguns with the Excel trade name were manufactured by CrescentFire Arms Co, Crescent-Davis Arms Corp, Iver Johnson Arms and CycleWorks, and J Stevens Arms Co. IMO, the 1920's or earlier sounds more likely. IMO, the 1930's is more likely.I found that a 16 gauge with serial number 8781XH was said to have been made between 19. I found an Iver Johnson Champion 16 gauge choke bore barrel and Lug Forged In One, 28' barrel and the Owl with serial # 69277XH that was said to have been made between 19. I found that reference books list the 16 gauge Champion as being made either from 1913-1941 or 1921-1939. The serial number 74432XH in the above photograph belongs to an Iver Johnson Champion 16 gauge 30', single barrel, Full choke shotgun.There are no published serial number - year manufactured tables for Iver Johnson shotguns. Excel was simply a Montgomery Ward brand name. Crescent Fire Arms Company and Crescent - Davis Arms Corporation, both of Norwich, Connecticut, were the other two manufacturers of the Excel shotguns, but their serial numbers did not have letter prefixes or suffixes. Your serial number ending in XH reveals that Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works of Fitchburg, Massachusetts made your Excel shotgun for Montgomery Ward, an old mail order and department store retailer. I have searched for any and all PDF files and came up with nothing so hopefully some of your knowledge will help me thank you all again. It will not let me post any pictures sorry I am new to the Forum. I will try to post pics thank you all in advance for any of your help. I would like to know if parts are available for this just as well as much as possible about this rifle came from my stepfather. ![]() The lower stamp Excel has serial number (E26675XH). The serial number stamped under barrel is (E26675H) along with 16 gauge choke bore barrel and lug forged in one on top of barrel with the front bead at the very tip of the barrel. ![]()
